The Keta outreach

iNtroduction

The Ghana Hernia Society (GHS)   recognizes the immense contribution   that Global development partners can make to  the hernia crusade in  Ghana. Consequently international collaboration is an integral part of the service delivery of the society. In accordance with this policy combined and collaborative activities are always welcome.

On the 11th   , 12th and 13th of January 2015   an outreach programme  mesh repair of inguinal hernias was jointly organized by Operation Hernia, The Dutch Hernia Society (represented by Dr Marten Simons) and the Ghana Hernia Society at the Municipal  Hospital,  Keta in the Volta Region of Ghana.  The programme was sponsored by Operation Hernia and the Incision Group of  Amsterdam The Netherlands.

During the two –day programme 14   patients were operated upon.

In addition   6 district medical officers   received practical hands –on training in groin dissection and mesh placement.

There was ample opportunity to strengthen the friendship between the Ghana and the Dutch Hernia Societies.

Conclusion:  The success of the outreach programme in Keta confirms the important role that international collaboration will continue to play in the delivery of  surgical services to many Ghanaians who live in the rural areas.
